Take your time to provide as much information as you can. Hanging up before the call is complete could delay the process and impact the level of care the patient receives. The information you provide will help them determine the type of ambulance they will need to send. It could be a basic ambulance, a full ICU ambulance, or an ambulance equipped to handle a specific type of injury, for example, a cardiac ambulance.

How Does Ambulance Dispatch Work?

Getting the exact address is important because GPS can only get an ambulance to a general location. Providing the correct address allows dispatch to send the ambulance to the general location. From there, GPS is of little help, and the dispatcher will look to you for further direction.

How Can You Stay Calm While Waiting for the Ambulance?

You have to wait a few minutes for the ambulance to arrive after you call. It feels longer than that. Here are things you can do to make things easier during that time.

• You have to keep the patient calm and comfortable. You don't want to move them if you don't have to.

• If you have an outside door that locks, unlock it. The first responders will appreciate it.

• If you have narrow streets, have someone direct the ambulance.

• Have things like medications or prescriptions that may help.

• The operator may be able to help if they are still on the phone with you.

You can always do things to help if you are calm.

What Does the Ambulance Team Do On Arrival?

Upon arrival, an ambulance team will do more than load a patient and drive away. They will quickly check and stabilize the patient's vital signs. Stabilization may include controlling a patient's bleeding or providing simple first aid.

You can usually request that the patient be taken to the hospital of your choice if the patient is not in critical condition. However, if the patient is in a critical condition, the closest hospital will usually be the best.
